Pathways of Growth
All over the world, people are stuck in the vicious cycle of poverty. Hardworking individuals rely on the necessary tools to grow out of poverty through small loans, job training, and encouragement.
ADRA’s economic growth programs have helped thousands of individuals increase productivity and income. Our portfolio has built upon gains in agricultural productivity and increased demand for smallholder farmer production through adoption of a value chain approach. ADRA supports people to improve their access to markets, gain vocational skills, and secure credit and other financial services.Donate Today

Ly Yang’s Story
In the past, villagers depended on nature for survival. There was no connection with outsiders because the road to our village was very difficult.
There was no clean water to use, no latrines, no medicine and no one to help us improve our knowledge about hygiene and health. Our men didn’t know any agricultural techniques. Pregnant women had many labour problems because childbirth was done by themselves without birth attendants. I did not even understand why we needed to go to the hospital.
Now, I believe. I have come to understand that a person needs to overcome these things in life. The things I just mentioned are important.
The ADRA team helped my community with so many things. ADRA did GFS water systems, latrine construction, village level medicine fund, cow fund and growing grasses for livestock. ADRA also gave us training in hygiene, nutrition, reproductive maternal and child health and trained some typical birth attendants (TBA) and village veterinarians!
Nowadays life is better since we have clean water to use, a latrine at home, and information on hygiene and nutrition. My family members are healthy and there are no disease problems.
We eat and live differently now. I am a lot more aware of our condition and I feel happy. Because we are doing better, now our children can go to school and learn to speak the Lao language properly.
Thank you ADRA for coming to our village!
Before ADRA, my family faced so many difficulties and challenges. We did not have enough water for our daily use. Every day we had to walk about 40 minutes back and forth to get water from the small river. My children used to be sick with diarrhea due to contaminated water. Before ADRAs’ involvement we did not know anything about nutrition and sanitation. We also were short on food since we did not have knowledge on agricultural techniques and methods to raise our livestock.
I feel very happy that ADRA has come into our village helping the community and my family make positive changes. ADRA provided the village a clean water system and supplied materials for latrine construction. We also received chicken fund, cow fund and a greenhouse.
My life now has changed a lot. I don’t have to worry about what I am going to eat as long as I am diligently working on my greenhouse. I can have vegetables to eat all year round. This year, I was able to earn about 1,300,000 kip from selling my chicken and, today I also earned about 16,000 kip selling my vegetables.
My lifestyle is changing as I am learning healthy habits from the health education team. I have adopted to drink clean water (boiled) and have a family plan. I can say I have a better life compared to before the ADRA project.
I feel satisfied and proud of my new life. I have more confidence and courage to work and provide more income for my family. Without ADRA, my only hope was to search for food in the forest and this is very difficult. As the natural resources become scarce I would not have had a clue as to where to go searching for food.
This project has helped my family to have good health, a good life and a good income.
