ADRA Australia Connection Trip 2019

On 28 September to 11 October 2019, ADRA Laos ADRA Laos had the opportunity to host the Morphett Vale Youth volunteer team from South Australia under the project, Water for Women and Children in Phoukoud District, Xiengkhouang Province, contributes to ADRA Laos’ existing projects—ENHUP and PICRAIL—in that it consists of both nutrition (hygiene and water) and food security (sustainable agriculture).

The team of 12 volunteers spent a total of five days (30 September to 4 October) working with community members, government staff, schools, and ADRA Lao project and program teams. The team participated in activities such as the rehabilitation of a Gravity Fed Water Facility in Pounghor cluster, greenhouse construction in Xay Village, and they rolled out hygiene and children’s activities in Say Elementary School. They worked enthusiastically and energetically. Their achievements include completing two greenhouses, six sessions of kid’s club activities, and one water system rehabilitation.

Throughout the week, the team enjoyed cultural exchange with ADRA staff, government partners, teachers, students, and villagers. Apart from hard work, they visited the Mulberries organic silk farm in Phonsavanh, watched a Hmong musician playing his traditional flute during the handover ceremony, enjoyed action songs presented by school children, learned Lao dances at the night market, and visited Phoukoud War Memorial Site and the Plain of Jars.

After the Project work, on 6 October 2019 to 11 October 2019, the team visited the famous World Heritage city, Luangprabang, and the tourist hub of Vang Vieng.
